Les verbes féquents - Être, Avoir, Pouvoir

As we learn to introduce ourselves and ask permission in French, it is important to know some of the most frequently used verbs in the French language.


Être (to be) – a very useful verb

Être (to be) is a very important verb, and it is used in many different situations, including ‎describing people and things, giving opinions, saying where you are, etc.

  • Je suis grand - I am tall.‎

  • Je suis une fille. - I am a girl.

  • Tu es anglais? - Are you English?‎

  • C’est génial! - It’s great!‎

  • Je suis allé(e) au parc - I went to the park.


Avoir (to have) – another very useful verb

Avoir (to have) is a very useful verb and is used whenever we would say 'have' in English.

  • J’ai les cheveux noirs - I have black hair.‎

  • Tu as un chat? - Do you have a cat?‎

  • Elle a un frère - She has a brother.‎

  • J’ai mangé une pomme - I have eaten/I ate an apple.


Pouvoir (to be able to) – a verb used to ask permission

Pouvoir (to be able to) is a very useful verb and is used whenever we would like to ask permission to do something.

  • Est-ce que je peux aller à la toilette s'il vous plaît? - Can I please go to the washroom?

  • Est-ce que je peux aller remplir ma bouteille d'eau s'il vous plaît? - Can I please go fill up my water bottle?‎

  • Est-ce que je peux emprunter un crayon s'il vous plaît? - Can I please borrow a pencil?

  • Est-ce que je peux aller travailler dans le pod s'il vous plaît? - Can I please go work in the pod?

  • Est ce que tu peux m'aider s'il vous plaît? - Can you please help me?
